What is Castile Soap?

Okay, you have heard you need to switch to Castile Soap, that it is amazing and will solve all of your problems but are still wondering what is it?

The short history of Castile soap

The story begins and the Castile region of Spain where local soap makers began making a bar soap made from local olive oil. Soap was hard to come by in medieval times so this soap quickly grew in popularity and was exported across Europe. This was a time when access to bathing was limited so this was one soap that could do all the washing needs from people to laundry.

What is pure Castile soap?

In North America the term "castile soap" means any soap made from plant based oils. Why is this important? It is a way to differentiate from animal "tallow" fat based soaps. If you see a liquid soap labeled as "pure" it means that is real soap and not full of detergents. Many of the daily products you use are in fact not soap based and are detergents.

Is castile soap a liquid or a bar soap?

Good news! Castile soap can be both a liquid soap or a bar soap. Originally it was only in bar form until the discovery of how to make liquid soap.

What is The Optimist Co. organic castile soap made from?

Our soap uses a combination of organic oils including coconut, olive oil and jojoba. It is preserved with organic rosemary extract and organic oil is added to make it extra gentile on your skin. How do I use castile soap?

If you think of the times a day when you use "soap" those are also the opportunities to switch to castile soap. You can use castile soap to wash your dishes, laundry, hair, body, floor, countertops, pets, teeth, kids toys, produce, appliances, face and outdoor furniture. This is just a list to get you started and you may even find more ways to use this soap. Castile soap is concentrated so you need to dilute it for many uses and can even add pure, essential oils to add scent or boost its cleaning or washing abilities.

Here is the best part of using castile soap. You know those long, scary lists of chemicals to avoid in all of you daily products including shampoo, body wash, laundry produces, cleaning products and so many more? By switching to castile soap you eliminate your exposure to chemicals like parabens, phthalates and synthetic ingredients.
